Mung Kavum


Mung Kavum and Mung Guli are both made up of roasted Green Gram flour.

Mung Kavum   Mung Guli


Mung Kavum (Green Gram Oil Cake)

Main ingredients

  • 1 cup White Rice/Wheat flour
  • 1 cup roasted Mung (Green Gram) flour
  • 2 pods Cardamoms
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Kithul or Coconut Treacle (1 cup)
  • Oil for deep frying

Ingredients for batter

  • 1 cup Rice/Wheat flour
  • Coconut milk of a half a coconut
  • 1 Egg (optional)
  • 2 dessert spoon of salt water

How to make:

Mix the two kinds of flour together with ground cardamom and salt. Place the honey and sugar in a pan and cook over the fire until it boils, stirring all the time.Add the mixed rice and roasted green gram flour gradually, stirring the mixture until the flour is cooked and the mixture thickens.Take the pan off the fire and turn the mixture onto a board.Untill mixture cools, pour about 1 cup of water into the pan in which the mixture was cooked
Place the pan back again over the fire, cook the "watery-mixture" stirring all the time until the water thickens.Take the pan off the fire and allow the mixure to cool.Now knead the mixtire well until it is soft and smooth enough to be rolled on the board. After flattening out, cut out the mixture into diamond shaped pieces.

To prepare the Batter: Place the flour into a bowl and make a smooth batter using a little of the milk at a time. Add the beaten egg, salt and water and the remaining milk until a consistency is formed which will coat the back of a spoon. To check for consistency, take a spoonful of the batter and drop it slowly back to the mixture. The batter should form pleats if the consistency is correct.

Heat about a cup of oil thoroughly in a frying pan. Dip the pieces in the batter and deep fry it. Fry until it turns golden brown.
Drain the kewum onto paper and serve.



Mung Guli (Green Gram Cake Balls)


  • 250 rice flour 250 mung bean - washed, dried and roasted over low heat
  • 250g sugar
  • 1 cup treacle
  • ¼ cup water
  • ½ tsp roasted crushed sweet cumin ( maaduru)
  • Coconut oil for frying

For batter:

  • 100g rice flour
  • 3 tbsp Coconut Milk dissolved in 1 cup of water
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Salt to taste

How to make:

Grind half the amount of mung beans to a fine flour. Grind the rest of mung beans in to a coarse flour with small pieces
In a large saucepan combine the treacle, salt, sugar and water. Bring to boil.
Add the mung flour, rice flour and sweet cumin and mix well .Cook until it becomes a thick paste.
Shape the mixture into small balls.
Mix all the batter ingredients with Coconut Milk
Heat the oil. Dip the mung balls in the batter and deep fry in hot oil until they become golden brown.
